History and Present Status

The graduate program for green energy science and technology (GEST) was founded in 2009 which was organized by Feng Chia University biohydrogen team. The GEST has developed a curriculum providing students with a broad base on which to build an engineering career. Courses include both basic sciences (physics, chemistry and biotechnology) and engineering sciences (mechanics, computer programming, fluid mechanics, resource utilization, resource application, energy handling and sustainable development).

 

Goal

The mission of the GEST is devoted to the developments of the energy research, energy saving, resource recycling, and training for the science and technology. The GEST also looks for the international cooperation to boost up the research quality and technology on the innovative energy research for the next generation, such as biohydrogen, biomass energy, solar energy, wind power, hydrogen and fuel cell, green building, green economy and greenhouse gas management, etc.

 

Features

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of green energy, faculties of GEST are from a variety of diverse academic/technical backgrounds, such as material science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and chemical engineering. Our faculty members coming from multidisciplinary teams are all deeply engaged in research and have numerous technical publications (journal papers, conference articles and patents). Our research topics include: 

  1. The anaerobic Fermentation for Biohydrogen Production including culture enrichment technology, high-rate three-phase bioreactor, molecular biological technology and pilot-scale technology
  2. Hydrogen and fuel cell, such as proton exchange membrane fuel cell and renewable hydrogen.
  3. Renewable energy, such as solar cell, solar energy, wind power and biomass.
  4. Energy storage system, advanced power management and energy-saving technology in manufacture.

We have more than 20 faculty members supported and joined in the GEST from variety of department at Feng Chia University. In the past few years, Feng Chia University biohydrogen team has achieved a world-leading performance in terms of biohydrogen technology. The 400 liter dark fermentation pilot plant has been constructed at Feng Chia campus in December, 2007. 

 

Future

The future development of the GEST will focus on the research cooperation with industries to help students to gain more practical experience in the application of academic studies and to develop the outcome of advanced researches. Our students will be well recognized by both research institutes and industries after graduation. Students are also encouraged to pursuit doctoral programs in various fields, such as resource engineering, energy engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, architecture and earth science. Students can also find a good job in the fields of power generation, energy consultant, petroleum, electricity and energy management institutes.
